D.C.

Look at that beautiful orange fur and my gorgeous gold eyes. Am I a stunner or what? I’m not just another pretty face either. I love to play. Sometimes I like to sit quietly with adult company. I’ll sit with you or you can entertain me with a toy. A nice quiet toy would be my favorite…none of these dumb things that rev up with lights or chase me across the floor!

I want to be the center of attention at home, and I really don’t want to share the spotlight with other pets or small children. If I’m you’re only pet, you’ll be able to spend more time admiring my appearance. You’ll look at me and say, “My, doesn’t DC go well against that carpet?”  Just come see for yourself at Animal Friends!

Got Soap Scum?

Hey, so we all have to deal with soap scum, it’s gross but unless your paying a cleaning crew to come into your house and deal with it for you your going to have to eventually face it.  We found a bathroom that  was in dire need of a good scrubbing down and  headed into the Garage to find some cleaning products to help us tackle the job. We had heard that Wizards Crud Release kicked Ass on household tasks so we wanted to give it a run on the this bathroom full of soap scum.  All we did was spray it on, let it site for about 2 minutes and rinsed it off. Take a look at the results…..  Yup, we’d have to say that it kicks ass. We haven’t found another cleaning product that you can spray on and wash off with this type of result….  Don’t forget this product can be used on the stuff in your Garage and your home!

BIG MAC

I was found as a stray in the South Hills. Just take one look at me and you can tell where the “Big” in my name comes from. I’m a seven-year-old black shorthair
Since I have yet to see any ads for cat weight watchers, whoever takes me into their home will have to be very patient with me. I’ll always give you those hungry looks, but you have to maintain my strict diet to ensure some weight loss and continued good health.
So, if you promise not to make any jokes about using me for a door stop or to keep the newspaper from blowing away, I’m willing to give you a chance! Is the feeling mutual? Come visit me at Animal Friends today!

Rare Solar Storm Tonight, Wednesday August 4th 2010

We have all heard of the Northern Lights, but hardly any of us have been lucky enough to see it in person. Well according to NASA Tuesday evening and tonight Wednesday August 4th 2010 you can catch a glimpse of a rare solar storm that will mimic a showing similar to that of the Northern Lights. The storm is expected to produce “rippling dancing curtains of green and red light” across the sky
On Sunday, NASA reported that satellites detected that a portion of the sun had erupted and dispatched a C-3 solar flare, which spawned a solar tsunami that’s headed for Earth. Once it reaches Earth, the charged particles will likely create northern lights-like displays.
But the light show will be visible only in the northern part of the U.S. and other countries. According to NASA, this type of eruption is one of the first signs that the sun is waking up and heading toward another solar maximum, which is expected in 2013.
The last solar maximum was in 2001.

Heels with Attitude

Looking for a pair of heels that don’t look like all the others?  Then you gotta Check out the Hayley from harley-Davidson Footwear. This heel has Attitude! The best part is, the Attitude won’t cost you when it comes to comfort. We were totally surprised at how comfortable this heel is. The shoe is made of a soft material so the cool buckle sportin’ ankle strap is not digging into your leg like we were thinking it would. We really like that!  We were also surprised at how much support this shoe gives and left us feeling stable and solid, not flimsy and wobbly like some other heels.   We love the cool metal stud accents, and of course the side buckle strap!

Bad Mascara? What works best for you?

Ok ladies, this topic has come up way to often for us not to take note. So many girls complain about bad mascara, ending up with clumpy looking “tarantula” eyes. So we want to hear from you, which mascara works best for you and which ones have you learned to steer away from. We included a refresher on some basic health tips for using mascara, but please respond with what brand mascara you seem to be having the best luck with.
1. Apply mascara only to the tips of your lashes. If you get it too close to the root, you could block glands on the eyelids that help form tears, and your eyes might not get the lubrication they need. That condition, called dry eye, can be painful or diminish your vision.
2. Don’t share mascara. The membrane around the eye can harbor bacteria that can easily latch on to a mascara brush. If you come in contact with another person’s germs, you could wind up with conjunctivitis or other infections.
3. Don’t add liquids to mascara. Tap water, which some people use to thin mascara, isn’t sterile and can allow potentially harmful bugs into the tube. Saliva is also full of bacteria and should not be used to moisten mascara.
4. Avoid lash-extending mascaras if you wear contacts. The microfibers can become trapped beneath your lens and scratch the cornea, increasing the risk of infection.
5. Never apply mascara in a moving vehicle. If the vehicle suddenly stops or jerks, you could injure yourself with the mascara brush.
6. Don’t store mascara at temperatures above 85° F (29° C) or leave it in your car for long periods, since the heat may encourage bacterial growth.
7. Throw out mascara every three months; by then bacteria will probably be growing in it. Throw it out sooner if it’s discolored, begins to smell, or if you’ve recently had an eye infection, all of which could signal contamination.

SAVANNAH

If you’re looking for a companion to melt your heart, Savannah is for you. She is an adorable female 2-year-old Siberian Husky mix with one brown eye, and one blue!
She has been winning over all of the volunteers with her warm and delightful demeanor, and she’s sure to make you smile. She’s a very happy dog, but does not get overly excited, and is very responsive to praise. She is affectionate and really enjoys being with people.
Savannah is a natural on the leash and needs moderate exercise. Walking with her is a piece of cake since she is more focused on walking with you than exploring on her own. She is obedient, and has great potential to learn commands and already knows how to sit!
This gentle girl would love to find an owner who can give her a quiet and loving place to live. She’s unsure of cats and other dogs, and would need some time to get to know them.
She loves to be pet and cuddled, but this girl needs some time to trust people fully.

Do you think that your home can be a safe haven for Savannah the sweetheart? If so, stop by Animal Friends in Pittsburgh, PA to get to know her!

What to do IF you get into an accident

Hopefully your doing all you can on your part to avoid accidents, but they do happen. After the initial shock and surprise it can be pretty hard to remember what to do next.  Our friends at GEICO Powersports reminded us that sometimes in the confusion of the moment, you may forget a few things.
