Adoption Success, Lola Starr!

By, Laura Klock
Our Klock Werks family is a group of animal and people lovers. We are so fortunate that there is such a spirit of service and caring amongst our team. Within our core Klock Werks team we represent many different groups in our community from myself as VP of the Mitchell Area Safehouse Foundation Board, to the CASA program, Food Fight, the Rodeo Committee, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Celebrate Recovery, MTI, and the Humane Society. And because of our team member Dan Cheeseman’s involvement in the Humane Society, we get the email alerts when a pet needs a home. I’m focusing on that one today, because my immediate family was recently affected by a photo that was sent, and now we have a new member of our family!
Her name is Lola Starr and she is a pit mix that was left at the vet’s office with a broken leg. They weren’t able to save her left leg, and had to amputate. Unfortunately her owners didn’t come pick her up, so she went to the Humane Society and ended up at my friend Michelle’s house as she fosters pets that need homes. Lola’s photo touched me and I just couldn’t shake the feeling, so I started introducing the idea to my husband Brian. After a week or so, it became “PLEASE BRIAN, I won’t ask for anything for a long time!!” (yes, I reverted to the actions of a 3rd grader) I really felt that she was supposed to be with us!
My husband has a big heart too – and he eventually said yes! Lola came to live with us on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. She is about 5 months old, and she is an angel! She gets along with Tae, our husky, and Q, our sheltie, just fine! She has an amazing spirit, gets around great on her 3 legs, and learns really quick. She wrestles with Tae at home, and sleeps in my office next to me while I work all day. She makes me smile. I was reflecting on the people that God has placed in my life…some to give me a message and others for me to influence – but I know there are no coincidences. And for us, that is how it’s been with our pets too! There is a story about how Q (his name on paper is Explosive GQ Special Edition which is a mouthful – so we call him Q) ended up in our home, and Tae too – he just showed up one day needing a home. Neither of those pets were planned but each have served such an amazing purpose in our lives. God placed them there. So, it really was no surprise that the next addition would be equally as special….and she is, our Lola Starr.

OGAMI

Konnichiwa! That’s “hello” in Japanese! I don’t like to brag, but I’m a very cute bunny! I have a soft black coat that I’ll let you pet and massage for hours! Just thinking about it makes me so excited! I live with my best friend Haruko, who is a very sweet bunny too. We’re a bonded couple, which means that we must go home together. I just couldn’t live without my cuddle buddy! I hope you’ll come visit both of us at Animal Friends sometime soon! Until then, Sayonara!

GIBON

Gibon was confiscated from a sad situation where he was neglected by the person he trusted to care for him. Though he’s safe and warm now, with three squares a day, this sweet young guy has a lot of love to give! He wants a family and a home where there’s a sunny window to gaze out of and a lap to curl up on. But with so many cute kittens up for adoption he wonders if anyone will stop and notice him and give him a shot at the life he deserves. Won’t you spend a little time visiting with Gibon today? He could be the companion you’ve been looking for. Stop by and meet him at Animal Friends.

BUBBA BOO

Hi, there. I’m Bubba Boo and I am one handsome cat, if I do say so myself. Don’t let my picture over there fool you. I’m a playing fool! If you have it, I’ll play with it, whether it’s toy mice, string toys or a laser pointer.

Even though I’m a young cat with plenty of play left in me, I’m actually very gentle. I used to live with kids, both older and younger, and I got along with them very well. They were very gentle with me and I loved that.
I would thrive in a controlled environment. With so many people coming and going in my former home, I used to sneak out a lot. The world can be scary for a cat and it would be best if I can watch it from the inside.
So what do you think? Won’t you come down to Animal Friends to meet me? I hope that we can be friends!

BROWNIE

What a happy smile! Brownie is determined that you will notice him. He is friendly and seeks attention, scratches and compliments. And what a handsome coat: a deep brindle of black with bits of golden-brown.  He’s a year old Labrador retiever/Akita mix.
Brownie knows sit, down and shake. He really enjoys riding in the car, so rides could be just one more place to enjoy his companionship.
Brownie needs lots of exercise and might do well as a companion for your exercise like long walks or running. He especially loves women and would need a home with grownups or older children. He enjoys other dogs but cats are better for him to admire at a distance. Come meet hi today at Animal Friends!

WILLY

When you first meet me, you’d better brace yourself because you’re about to experience a big surge of love! I’m Willy, a big friendly 4 year old St. Bernard who’s looking for someone to help me become a better dog.

I’ll get the bad news out of the way first: I’m very clingy! I’ve been left by different people and returned so many times that I don’t know what to do! I’m afraid that anytime you leave me you won’t come back! I’m also a big galoot who doesn’t know his own size. So while I love kids, I do best with older children that I won’t accidentally knock over with my size! I still mouth a little bit when I get excited so I do need plenty of training as well.

The good news: I’m very affectionate and love all kinds of people. I don’t tear things up in the house and I love going for a ride in the car (if I can fit inside it!). I like other dogs and would do great with someone to help show me the ropes. Do you have enough room in your family for me? Come meet me today At Animal Friends!

PAL

Pal is a handsome and proud 11-year-old boxer mix. His last family provided care and training, but brought him to Animal Friends because they could no longer keep him. Pal is very strong and looks a bit intimidating, but he walks very well on a leash–which he loves! Pal will even pick up your leash, unroll it, and hold it until you take him for a walk. Pal loves to learn and is fun to train. His antics make him a volunteer favorite. If you have it in your heart to give Pal a second chance, he will repay you forever. Stop by Animal Friends and meet him today!

DOODLES

Doodles is a gorgeous, happy little terrier that you may see leaping into the air one moment as if on a pogo stick and then cuddling with a volunteer the next. This sweet, entertaining, bouncy guy walks great on a leash and will jump onto a bench to snuggle up to a volunteer.
On a recent outing to the park, Doodles walked well with other dogs and rode very well in the car. Doodles is a bright, high-energy dog who would excel in obedience training and with an active family who has terrier experience and older or no children. Parson Russell Terriers are very intelligent dogs who thrive when given lots of exercise and mental stimulation.

Are you looking for an adorable companion for long walks and who would be great fun learning tricks and commands in behavior classes? If so, silly little Doodles is your guy! Come meet Doodles at Animal Friends today!

CHUCKLES

Animal Friends has always been known go the extra mile for a pet in need. For Chuckles, a 9-year-old Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog mix, those extra miles required a plane ticket.

Chuckles was adopted from Animal Friends several years ago. Recently, she moved with her owner to St. Louis, MO. But sometimes, life doesn’t go as planned. That’s when Chuckles’s owner found that he had to move again and ended up in an apartment building that didn’t allow dogs.

Chuckles found herself in a crowded shelter that is forced to euthanize animals to make space. When Animal Friends received a call from the shelter and learned that one of our alumni was stuck 600 miles away from home, staff and volunteers swung into action. Ultimately, they decided that the safest and most efficient way to get Chuckles home was for her to fly, and a plane ticket was purchased in her name.

Chuckles is now awaiting adoption into a loving home. She is gentle, polite, affectionate, and friendly with people and dogs. She knows several commands including “sit,” “paw” and “down.” She is crate trained and housebroken and would make a fantastic companion for just about any family! Inquire about her today at Animal Friends!
