COMMET

My sister and I were in a home together, but due to allergies, we found ourselves at Animal Friends. In addition to getting along with my sister, I am really a “people cat.” I’m used to being picked up, and I enjoy being petted while sitting on someone’s lap. Don’t sweat the spelling of my name. You can drop one of the “m”s once we get home; or, you can pick any other name that strikes you.
Look at my black and white face. Did you ever see such great markings in all your life? Not only that, but check out those sharp black smudges on my paws. I don’t know about talent, but if they ever come out with a show called “America’s Got Looks,” I would take first place paws down!
If you’re looking for two cats, my sister and I would make a great pair! If you already have cats, the Adoption Counselor at Animal Friends can help determine whether we’d be a good match. Most importantly, she’ll help you with the form that is the first step toward us getting together in the Get Acquainted room.

What exactly is Hydrogenated Oils, and why should we avoid them?

We have all heard that hydrogenated oil is not good for our diets, but if your like us you “Have” to know WHY? We did some digging around and came up with these facts about hydrogenated oils, pretty interesting stuff, check it out….
Oils have been hydrogenated for many decades, to prolong their shelf life and make the oils more stable. Hydrogenated oil is oil in which the essential fatty acids have been converted to a different form chemically, which has several effects. Hydrogenated oil is far more shelf stable, and will not go rancid as quickly as untreated oil. It also has a higher melting point, and is often used in frying and pastries for this reason. When hydrogenated, the chemical structure of the oil is changed, which scientists in the 1990s began to realize could result in negative health effects. Hydrogenated oil is made by forcing hydrogen gas into oil at high pressure. Both animal and vegetable fats can be and are hydrogenated. In general, the more solid the oil is, the more hydrogenated it is. Two common examples of hydrogenated oil are Crisco and margarine. In the 1990s, it was realized that these products might have deleterious health effects, a tragic irony since they were originally produced and promoted as being healthier than conventional oils. The unstable fatty acids in oils are unsaturated fats, which have been determined to be healthier for consumers, acting to reduce cholesterol in some cases. When hydrogenated oil is made, these healthy fats are converted into a new type of fatty acid, known as a trans fat. Trans fats are not at all good for one’s health. In some highly hydrogenated oils like margarine, trans fats can make up almost half of the total fat content.  Trans fatty acids work to increase LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, and they also decrease HDL cholesterol, which is “good” cholesterol. This means that the fats in hydrogenated oil are far more damaging than even saturated fats, which medical professionals have already determined to be harmful. There is also evidence to suggest that trans fatty acids may bioaccumulate in the body, because the digestive system has difficulty figuring out what to do with them. As a result, a diet high in trans fats will result in weight gain.
Consumption of hydrogenated oil has been linked with diabetes, coronary disease, and obesity in a wide number of scientific studies. In the 1990s, many activists began to lobby for clear food labeling, indicating when products contained trans fats. Other activists went further, attempting to ban trans fats because of their detriment to human health. All medical professionals agree that people should limit their consumption of hydrogenated oil to avoid exposure to trans fats, and should eat foods with healthy fats such as nuts, avocados, and olive oil.

Washing, Waxing & Treating Seats and Accessories

Most aftermarket seats are made of the highest quality vinyl and will retain their looks for years without any extra care. We know first hand since our own personal tour of the factory that Mustang seats can be washed with any mild, non-abrasive detergent and will last as long as you own your bike. For regular maintenance Mustang recommends Protect All™, a do-it-all type of cleaner that cleans, polishes, waxes, treats and protects every surface. Protect All™s water repellent Carnauba Wax Formula provides durable protection against all elements. The quality of carnauba wax, incorporated into the formula, is largely responsible for providing durable protection. Simply spray, wipe, and polish dry for a beautiful, durable, lasting shine.
Protect All’s™ anti-static property is ideal for treating vinyl to a clean, dry natural appearance. It leaves NO oily film to attract dust and dirt. With regular use, Protect All™s highly effective UV absorber additive helps to protect all surfaces by absorbing the UV light rays and blocking them from reaching the finish. Also this won’t leave you with a “Slippery” seat which can be dangerous.

Cuts, Scratches or Scuff Marks

As with any upholstered product (such as couches, chairs or car seats), there is a possibility of cutting or tearing the cover material. If you own a Mustang seat you can contact Mustang directly and one of the seats experts will provide you with the best possible advice about your particular situation. (Most local upholstery shops do a very good job of repairing vinyl.)
If your seat has been scratched or scuffed, try gently applying a small dab of black paste shoe polish on the affected area. Allow it to dry completely, then buff out with a clean soft cloth. If you have any questions, please contact Mustang and speak to one of the seat experts.

The first thing you’ll notice about me is my gorgeous orange and white coat, but I’ve got other great attributes as well. I don’t sing, but I’m a good snuggler and love being with people. I lived with an elderly person in my old home so I’d be make a great companion for a single person or family.
And not only is my adoption sponsored by one of my adoring fans, but I even come with love and a special handmade gift from the kids at Richland Elementary in Gibsonia. Thanks, Mrs. Yingling’s class! Come see me at Animal Friends!

Tips for Preventing the Theft of Your Bike, by GEICO

There are many ways to secure your motorcycle to prevent theft.
The best deterrent is to utilize more than one security measure; the more a thief has to defeat, the less potential for success.
Always keep the ignition locked.
Secure your motorcycle to a fixed, or anchored object, or another motorcycle.
Park in a secure and well-lit area. If in doubt, do not park there.
If your bike is not garaged, keep it covered; non-name brand covers are preferable to prevent advertising the type of bike that lies beneath.
Limit the amount of time your bike is left unattended, or unsupervised.
Vary your routes and routines to prevent being followed.
Use a high quality lock and chain. Secure the chain through the bike frame versus the wheels which can be easily removed.
Consider adding a motorcycle anti-theft, or security system.
Despite all of your precautions, if your bike is stolen contact the police and your Insurance provider immediately. Visit GEICO for a free Quote.
