Ice Melt Safe for your Pets and Children

We are all in the midst of winter and enjoying our time shoveling snow, but before you go reaching for any old bag of ice melt, be aware some are dangerous for your pets and children.
Dogs and cats who lick rock salt or salt-based products off their paws and coat can develop skin conditions, intestinal problems and an inflammation of the stomach called gastritis.
"It's very much of an irritant," said Dr. Peg Rucker, of Lebanon, Va., past president of the American Animal Hospital Association.
"Concentrated amounts [of salt] between the toes can cause ulcers and a lot of redness to tissue. They're going to lick that excessively, and that causes acute moist dermatitis, or pododermitis. ... Then they can get bacterial infection and need antibiotics."
While licking their feet, cats and dogs are going to eat the de-icer, and that can cause internal problems, depending on how much they ingest and whether it's rock salt (sodium chloride) or compounds including the salts known as calcium chloride and potassium chloride.

Rock salt and salt-based snow melters also pose a potential danger to humans.
Before heading to the store to purchase your ice melt, if you have pets consider getting Safe Paw.
Safe Paw, also marketed as Safe Thaw, grew out of a product chemical engineer Steve Greenwald, of Huntingdon Valley, Bucks County, invented for the nuclear power industry to rid facilities of ice and snow. "It wouldn't kill fish, and it had to be safe on equipment and safe for people and whatnot."
Later, Greenwald's son asked if he could make a product that wouldn't irritate his dog's feet or make him sick.
PETCO and PETsMART also carry Safe Paw or to locate a store near you visit safe Paw

Winter Pet Care

With cold Arctic air sweeping across the nation, The Humane Society of the United States urges pet owners to take extra precautions this winter to ensure the safety of their companion animals.

Don't leave pets outdoors when the temperature drops. Dogs and cats are safer indoors, except when taken out for supervised exercise. Regardless of the season, shorthaired, very young, or old dogs and all cats should never be left outside without supervision. Short-coated dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a sweater during walks.

Pets who spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy. Routinely check your pet's water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic food and water bowls rather than metal; when the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can stick and freeze to metal.

Warm engines in parked cars attract cats and small wildlife, who may crawl up under the hood. To avoid injuring any hidden animals, bang on your car's hood to scare them away before starting your engine.

The salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate the pads of your pet's feet and may be harmful if ingested. Wipe the feet with a damp towel before your pet licks them to remove snow packed between your pet's paws. Pet-friendly ice melts are available at many pet supply stores across the nation or online.

Antifreeze is a deadly poison, but it has a sweet taste that can attract animals and children. Wipe up spills and store antifreeze (and all household chemicals) out of reach. Better yet, use antifreeze-coolant made with propylene glycol, which is less toxic in small amounts than traditional ethylene glycol antifreeze.

No matter what the temperature, wind chill can threaten a pet's life. A dog or cat is happiest and healthiest when kept indoors. If your dog spends significant time outdoors, however, he/she must be protected by a dry, draft-free doghouse that is large enough to allow the dog to sit and lie down comfortably, but small enough to hold in his/her body heat. The floor should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The house should be turned to face away from the wind, and the doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

If you're feeding homeless cats, be sure to provide an insulated shelter for them. Information about building a shelter, spaying and neutering and more is available at humanesociety.org/feralcat

Happy "HOWL-WEEN"!

If your planning on dressing your pet up for Halloween this year the ASPCA has made up a list of tips on keeping your pet safe!

• Schedule a dress rehearsal and try on all costumes well before the big night. Please don't put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!). If your pet seems distressed or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting him go au naturale or in a simple, festive bandana.
• Does your pet have sensitive skin? Even those with hearty coats can have allergic reactions to the synthetic materials found in many costumes. While you ride a sugar high, your pet might be uncomfortably scratching the night away.
• If you do dress up your pet, be sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe, and make absolutely sure it doesn’t limit your pet’s movement, hearing, vision or ability to breathe or bark. Ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, which can lead to injury.
• It’s best to avoid costumes with lots of sequins or other dangling parts that your pet could eat or choke on. If your pet ingests something poisonous, immediately contact your vet or the ASPCA’s 24-hour poison control hotline at (888) 426-4435.

Disc-Connected K9's.... World Famous Frisbee Dogs!

How freakin' cool was it to see these guys perform at Carlisle summer bike fest. These dogs ROCK... Carlisle is a family oriented motorcycle event so it was fitting for them to invite The world Famous Frisbee dogs "Easy Rider" and the 2008 world disc dog champion "Harley Davidson"

Not only are these dogs totally entertaining, but they are Rescues!.... We love what Lawrence and Jodi do with these dogs, check this out........

Lawrence back in the day himself was a world champion in the frisbee series (people only) but after a career ending injury he decided to take to the sport on a different level. Lawrence set out to find dogs that were left behind or "trouble makers" that no one wanted and worked real hard with them to turn them into Frisbee champions. Champions is an understatement, these dogs are top performers and never miss a beat! Lawrence and Jodi have been working together with rescue dogs for over 17 years now.

You can see the love and respect they both have for their family of dogs and it is so obvious the dogs feel the same right back. Millicent and I were lucky enough to sit right up next to the dogs "show" trailer during a performance and let me tell you it's all about the dogs with Jodi and Lawrence. The dogs were kept in a nice quiet, dark, air conditioned trailer, talk about keeping the stars happy! We love how Jodi and Lawrence promote pet adoption in such a positive manner. Check out the site, see all the champion pooches and hopefully see these guys perform somewhere on the road! Check them out online at www.k9frisbee.com, tell them the Garage-Girls Sent ya!

This is a picture of Bonita Chiquita.

She is one of the best dogs around and she loves loves loves to ride on the bike.  Mary and Pai are her owners and I’m kind of like an aunt!!!  This dog is very special to us and I was hoping that you would consider including her on your web site.

Rainbow Bridge

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross The Rainbow Bridge together.... In Memory of my sweet Ferret, Cameron Firebolt.

Pittsburgh Steelers Heading to The Superbowl

Name: DEFENSE.

Breed: Pittsburgh Bird Dog.

Attributes: This breed favors just about anything with feathers, scavenger birds like Ravens for dinner and is longing for a song bird like a Cardinal for desert. Had a little trouble with birds of prey a few months ago, but his training is finely tuned at this point. This breed is also known to throw down with dolphins, giants, titans, cowboys, panthers and bears. That can get pretty ugly, but not as scary as when they see a brown dog. They will viciously turn on brown dogs from Ohio without provocation. Do not attempt to intervene in the altercation. Stand Clear.

Environment: This breed sometimes lives in junk yards and military compounds. They are best at HOME DEFENSE, but adapt very well to any field environment.

Const. Adam Janes And his K9 Partner Cezar

© Copyright The Windsor Star

When Const. Adam Janes finally caught up to police dog Cezar and one of two stolen car suspects he was chasing, he was horrified to see the life being choked out of his canine partner. Cezar, a 77-pound, 41⁄2-year-old police dog, narrowly escaped death early Wednesday when the suspect managed to wrestle it down and get an arm around its neck. Police said the teenager was strangling the German shepherd with such force that officers had to shoot him with a Taser to make him let go.

“When we found the dog he was lifeless and in the arms of one of the male parties,” said Janes, Cezar’s partner for three years.
“He was holding him. What happened between the two parties and the dog is uncertain. All I know is the dog at that point was, in my mind, lifeless. Totally unresponsive, tongue hanging out. To be honest, I thought he was gone.” Janes heard a scream but it took him four minutes to catch up, so he doesn’t know what happened. He came upon one suspect sitting on the ground choking his dog.
The Taser shot loosened the teen’s grip. Janes scooped up his partner. He rushed back to the car with Cezar slumped over his shoulder. Janes, an eight-year police veteran, struggled to express what went through his mind when he thought Cezar was dead. “These dogs are our partners,” he said. “They go home with us every day. Even on days off, you still got the dog. He’s everything to you. At home, the kids play with them. The dog is 24 hours a day our partner, 365 days, the whole nine yards.”
On the way to the animal clinic, Cezar started some shallow breathing. A veterinarian examined Cezar and found no lasting physical damage.
“In my mind, he was passed away at that moment, then came back to us,” said Janes.
Several officers and a second police dog, Quincy, descended on the area to find the second teenager.
Quincy found him hiding under some brush. The suspect took off running, but Quincy chased him and latched onto the youth’s arm with his jaws.
Staff Sgt. Ed McNorton said the teen repeatedly punched Quincy in the head and struggled when officers arrested him.
“Both guys were apprehended by the dogs,” said Janes. “So it was a good night for the dogs.” The suspects, in their mid-teens, both face charges of automobile theft, possession of stolen property, possession of break-in tools, resisting arrest and endangering the life of an animal. The second teen faces additional charges of assaulting a police officer and breach of recognizance.

Keep your pets safe over the Holidays.

The great folks at the ASPCA put this info together.

Candies or gum containing the sweetener xylitol can cause a drop in blood sugar, resulting in depression, loss of coordination, and seizures.

Bones can splinter and cause blockages. Greasy, spicy, and fatty foods can cause an upset stomach.

Alcohol can cause a pet to go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.

Aluminum foil and cellophane wrappers can cause vomiting and intestinal blockage.

Toxic lilies can cause kidney failure in cats.

Mistletoe and holly berries can cause gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, nausea, diarrhea), cardiovascular problems, and lethargy.

Considered very low in toxicity, poinsettias might cause mild vomiting or nausea.

Christmas tree water may contain fertilizers that can upset a pet’s stomach. Stagnant water can also be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Decorations like ribbon or tinsel can become lodged in intestines and
cause an obstruction.

Brian sent this in to us of his new Cruisin' Companion.

"My new girl Mia is a German Shepard. I should've named her shadow. She is always under my feet. Goes everywhere with me including the boat and the bike. She took to the side hack with no problems. So far this year she has a couple thousand miles in it."

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

K-9 Congressional Medal of Honor Winner, A Hero Dog Named Brutus

This is Brutus, a military K9 at McChord. He's huge - part Boxer and part British Bull Mastiff and tops the scales at 200 lbs. His handler took the picture. "Brutus is running toward me because he knows I have some Milk Bone treats, so he's slobbering away! I had to duck around a tree just before he got to me in case he couldn't stop, but he did."
Brutus won the Congressional Medal of Honor last year from his tour in Iraq . His handler and four other soldiers were taken hostage by insurgents. Brutus and his handler communicate by sign language and he gave Brutus the signal that meant 'go away but come back and find me'. The Iraqis paid no attention to Brutus. He came back later and quietly tore the throat out of one guard at one door and another guard at another door. He then jumped against one of the doors repeatedly (the guys were being held in an old warehouse) until it opened. He went in and untied his handler and they all escaped. He's the first K9 to receive this honor. If he knows you're ok, he's a big old lug and wants to sit in your lap. Enjoys the company of cats.

UPDATE... it has been brought to our attention, this story could be a hoax. We don't know for sure you never know what to believe anymore, regardless we like the picture of this cute man and will keep it here, this link was sent to us feel free to check it out at snopes.com

Keep your pets safe on Halloween.

(NEW YORK) -- Halloween can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for your pet. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals -- ASPCA -- offers some tips to protect your pet on Halloween:

Don't leave your pet out in the yard on Halloween. There are plenty of stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured, stolen and even killed pets on this night.

Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets. Chocolate is poisonous to a lot of animals, and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed.
Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin. Pets may knock it over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned.
Don't dress the dog or cat in costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it puts a lot of stress on the animal.
If you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe -- it should not constrict her movement, hearing or ability to breathe or bark. Be careful not to obstruct his vision. Even the sweetest animal can get snappy when she can't see what's going on around her.
All but the most social dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours. Too many strangers in strange garb can be scary for a dog.
Be careful your cat or dog doesn't dart outside when you open the door for trick-or-treaters

Defenders of Wildlife
Most of us here at Garage-Girls belong to the Defenders of Wildlife, an organization positioned on protecting our nations native wildlife species and habitats. We love the wildlife adoption section of the site. As the gift giving season approaches in this tough economy why not chose a gift for someone special that will actually mean something. Why spend money on meaningless gifts when you can choose a gift in someone's name and present them with a way of helping to protect endangered wild animals and the importance of conservation.

Have you seen me walking down the street?

Let me introduce myself: my name is Ray Hubbard, Sergeant, US Army, Retired (6-26-08) and I'm one of many thousands of wounded Veterans who are returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with injuries that Veteran's in other wars, likely would not have survived.

As a result of an explosion while I was on duty at the Baghdad International Airport that took my left leg, crushed my right elbow, tore through my left shoulder, ripping open my abdomen and severing my carotid artery, I've been through months of rehabilitation to re-learn the 'simple tasks' others take for granted - swallowing, standing, turning on lights and balance.  I am fortunate to be a "survivor" who learned early in my recovery of a Canine Assistance dog program called Canines for Combat Veterans with the NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans organization in Princeton, MA.

Those who are not disabled know how easy it is to open a refrigerator door, or quickly run to pick-up the ringing phone or answer the doorbell or flipping on a light switch, or even picking up a bottle of medication, yet these 'simple' tasks are complicated for me.  I wear a prosthesis and need the assistance of a "balance dog or walking cane", my own service dog, named Dace.  She helps me be more self-reliant and deal with the emotional roller coaster of living with severe handicaps.  Dace helps with those "simple" tasks and is an empathetic companion who understands my mCanines for Combat Veterans was started in 2006 after NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans was invited to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to do an in-service about the benefits of a canine companion for Veterans who treasure their independence yet need assistance with what others may call, "simple tasks".

NEADS has graduated nine (9) canine Assistance Teams, specifically for the disabilities and needs of the Veterans they support.  These canines are helping their human companions far beyond the variety of tasks they are trained for...these canines provide love, comfort, companionship, independence and an innate quality to sense my emotions and bring me back to reality when I inevitably relive the horrors of my battlefield experiences.

I'm sharing my story with you to ask your support.

I'm hoping you'll remember, not only the Veteran's returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, but everyone who has a disability where a service or assistance dog can be of support, service and comfort.  NEADS is one of this country's oldest continuous assistance dog programs, providing a variety of specially trained dogs: Hearing Dogs, Social Dogs, Ministry Dogs, Walker/Balance Dogs, Therapy Dogs, and soon, Dogs for those with PTSD and children with Autism.

This exceptional organization can only help me and the 1,000+ other assistance dog teams we've trained and graduated with your generous support.  It is through your generosity that NEADS is able to provide Service Dogs like Dace, at no cost to wounded warriors.

Please visit our main website - www.neads.org - and in particular the webpage dealing with my wounded colleagues.

Please make a contribution to support those with disabilities who will benefit from the love, companionship and service of a loving, compassionate canine.  Your support will be put to immediate use by those with needs far beyond what many people grapple with every day. I am not alone, but I would feel that way without Dace.

Thank you, sincerely, Raymond Hubbard Sergeant, US Army, Retired (6-28-08

Pam from Fast Lane Biker New Jersey is one cool chick. She is just as crazy about animals as I am. Recently we both were head over heals for some Chihuahua pups at the Fast Lane Show Rally at the Rock, she sent these pics in of her dogs.

“Samson is a very large Doberman. He is 143 pounds. We call him the gentle giant. Samson is all about his family especially my daughter. She reads to him every night, just tell him it’s “story time” and he goes into her room. If you are wondering why he is so handsome it is because we wash him with extra handsome shampoo. We love having him as a part of our family.
Delilah came to us this past Christmas. Santa brought her for my daughter. Delilah is a Tibetan terrier. She loves to be outside running around like a nut. We hope someday she calms down just a bit and if she doesn't we will still love her. Thanks Santa!” ~Pam

A famous Skateboarding Bulldog named Bailey….

Melody sent this in about her beloved Bailey, Bailey went missing for over 3 weeks and the family never gave up once in hopes to bring him back home, he is home safe now and Melody would like to share her story with us… ~Sara

“This is Bailey our Old English “skater” bulldog... he was missing for a month and we went into action. It was hell. He is now back safe with us along with his African Gray parrot Birdie. What a nightmare. Here is the link to the newscast when he was missing.

I wish we could share his story with the world to let them know what we did and how we got him back AND NEVER GIVE UP IF YOUR PET IS MISSING!

Our kids were so hurt, he is our life, we did everything we could posted life size photos all over the valley it took us three weeks to post them all. It is a very long story on how he was found, it was his love for skateboards that got the god to surrender him to the Castaic pound under the name Lucky and said he goes crazy and is triggered over anything with little wheels.

HAHA BAILEY IS A SKATER DOG hand sign trained so of course the thief did not know Bailey. Bailey lost so much weight and was sick when we got him back; we were greeted by the news at our vet as Bailey was sedated for proper treatment.

That was about two weeks ago. We love him with everything, we even hired Blood hounds to track his scent, check them out at  www.lostpetdetection.com   Landa was awesome and we stuck to the plan.

We hope he gets on your site he is our Hero!”

Hugs to you.  Sincerely, Melody, Dino, Bailey & Family.

Louie

This is Louie, he belonged to Johnny Chop, one cute little Boston terrier I don’t think I ever meet another dog as smart as this little louie!  He loved Johnny and would follow him everywhere.

In Memory of Nena

Our friend Brian (you may remember his bird Auto posted her on Cruisin Companions) recently lost his girl Nena. “Nena was 15 1/2 years old. I took her to the shop the first day I got her and
she worked everyday. I would take her home every night. She loved to ride in the side hack on my bike”.

Davidson Express Spring Show

I was invited out to be a guest judge at the Davidson Express Spring Show along with Drag Racer Mike Romine and Bike Builder Kendall Johnson; Kendall couldn’t make it so Gary Maurer filled in.  We had a great time with everyone in downtown Otsego MI.  Here are a few of the Cruisin’ Companions we met out at the show.

My Sister Karen shared her guys with us,

“Jasmine the mountain Dog thinks she is the boss of everyone including the couch, if you’re in her spot she’ll try to head-butt you out of the way.  Lela the kitty doesn’t care for Jasmine but she gets along with JJ and my 7 year old daughter Rachel is best friends with JJ.”

Denyse shared her cute guys with us…

“My black dog’s name is Nikki she is a Keeshound, my white dog’s name is Shania she is a Samoyed, my kitty’s name is Zanzibar he is a Bengal.
I adopted my dogs about 3 years ago, they have been together since they were puppies. Whenever I bring them anywhere they have to go together, they cannot be separated. I have had Zanzibar for about 6 years we got him from abreeder in Maine, he is the boss of the house. He will stop my 80 pound Samoyed in her tracks! When he was not even a year old he dislocated his
knee and had to have Knee replacement, then a few years later he jumped onto our woodstove and burnt all the skin off the pads of all of his feet. He had to have laser surgery to repair the damage; needless to say he is a very expensive cat!!!!”

A friend of mine Colleen Swartz, is another fellow writer photographer, I met Colleen in 2005 and knew she was a special person, I introduced her to Chris at The Cycle Source Magazine and she has been writing a column “From Behind the Lens” ever since, she shared this about her little guy “Bubble”.

I would like to introduce “Garage Girls” to Bubble.  Bubble is 3 months old and I just adopted him from a no-kill shelter located in Nebraska called “Hearts United for Animals” or HUA for short.  They have won much recognition for their work using the Internet as an adoption tool.  You can check them out at www.hua.org.
I had lived the past 8 years with a Pomeranian named “Scooter” who I adopted from the local humane society at the age of 10.  Scooter passed away in August, 2007 and I was so lonely for another little dog in my life.  HUA had gotten Bubble and his sister, Squeak, from animal control where they were found abandoned in a public park.
I can’t imagine anyone leaving that little face behind.  But I have always known that my view of animals is not like everyone’s views of animals.  I find them to be magical and giving, understanding and slow to anger, I know them to be loving and kind and welcoming.  They are filled with sympathy and empathy for each other and their owners.  I wish people were as kind and giving as the dogs I know.

Thanks for sharing Colleen, Bubble is very Lucky to have you to share his life with

My good Friend Brian Boria sent me this pic of his Bird Auto…

Auto (AKA  Auto burger, big bird, dumb dumb, pecker face) is a 4 year old Yellow Nape Amazon. He loves to ride in the truck and sits on the grab bar in front of the passenger seat, he tries to get over to the steering wheel once in a while because these birds always try to sit on the highest perch available. He comes to work with me and has a big perch with toys on it in my office. Almost anybody can hold him and he is very social. He is starting to get a pretty big vocabulary. He says” Are you a good boy, yes you are" "whatta ya doin?" "mmmmmmmm yummy" "ANDREW!!!!!!""Helllllooooooooo" "Hey,Hey" "HoHoHo"   I am trying to get him to say"Hey, wanna buy a tractor"  That should be perfected by next year.

The Whiskey Girls Jen sent in a pic of little “Chopper”, Jody and I met Chopper in Boston, he is a very sweet boy.

Chopper comes from Spoiled Rotten Yorkies of Bayside NY  When I got there, Chopper came right up to me sat on my lap and didn't leave for the 2 hours that I was there. Come to find out someone already bought him and decided they didn't want him anymore, so that is why he was back with the litter. :(

The drive back he puked all over my car; I hit every Petco, Petsmart on the way home to find something so he would stop getting sick.  Finally when we got home he was like a burst of energy.   Every night he would fall asleep on this toy Chopper, right on the seat, so I decided to call him Chopper.

When you fire up a motorcycle his ears perk up and he starts doing this prance thinking he is going for a ride.  When he rides he puts his two paws on my legs and sticks his head out to the side to catch air in his face.   He has been to Laconia Bike week twice so far.
When I first got him we would visit children in hospitals and visit nursing homes to put a smile on their faces.   Now, since I am so busy with work, he comes to work with me at the office and when the weekend hits he is on the road with us at trade shows as our Whiskey Pup.
He loves to play soccer; he will push the ball with his head and try to dodge your feet as you come towards him.  He attempts to skate board but he gets too nervous when he can’t stop the board.

Thanks for sharing Jen, Chopper sure is cute! ~Sara

Natalie shared this about her darling Sheba, please keep Sheba in your thoughts and prayers, she could use some healing thoughts her way..

This is Sheba.  She is my 5-year-old beagle bundle of love and energy.  My constant companion and friend who brings so much joy to life.  She loves life and playing with our other beagle and chasing her around the yard.  When I come home there is nothing like the welcome that I receive from her no matter how short or long a time that I am gone she is ALWAYS happy to see me.

She is going through a bit of a rough time at the moment (although no one told her) as she had a lump removed that turned out to be a cancerous stage II mast cell tumor.  We took her to see an oncologist who did some tests that came back normal and she has to have another surgery to take out some more tissue to make sure they got it all.  I wish that she didn't have to go through another surgery, but I pray that it will all be removed.  So any thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: Well after the surgery and the results of the lab report, it came back the the margins were not clean. She is now in her third week of radiation treatment. She her self is doing GREAT! She is such a little trooper. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for my baby girl.

Attila sent in this great shot of George Barris’s daugter Joji with his brother's Cane Corso “Isabella” they are hanging next to Joji’s motorcycle a Big Dog Mastiff.   Now that’s a pair of dueling big Dogs!!!

A friend to Garage-Girls Julie Morrette, who is actually a certified Motorcycle Safety Course instructor shared this about her little guy “Thunder”.

Thunder was born in July 2007 in Rapid City, SD.  When I found this little guy we had just exited a bar into the active streets of Sturgis this past August. Being a Doberman lover and wanting another one, my decision was made after the group kept walking and the boys yelled back..."either buy him or let's go."  The next day he was mine.  He rode in style back to PA as the rest of us rode beside him on our bikes.  I didn't buy as many t-shirts as the rest of our crew, so the saying goes...  (from Rick and Kenny)  "My girlfriend bought a puppy and all I got was a t-shirt from Sturgis."

Julie, I just found out is an artist, and her work is awesome, she has one piece titled “Riding in the rearview” that I’m in love with. Its impressionistic style reminds me of how things look when your cruising down the road and the environment starts to blur past you.  Check out Julies work at http://morrette.artistportfolio.net/

Like most of you we here at Garage-Girls have a passion for the furry 4-legged friends in our lives. We are also passionate about trying to help the many homeless animals living on their own. A friend of ours, Christie Brimmeier turned us on to Animal Friends and the great things they do to help save the lives of so many animals and find good loving homes for them. One way she reached out was by sharing the book “Animal Friends, Tail wagging and Throat Purring Stories of Shelter and Rescue Pets” by Christina J. O’Donnell. From this book here are 6 steps you can take to help animals.

1. Spay or Neuter your pet and encourage others to do so.
2. Report any signs of companion animal neglect and or abuse.
3. When it is the right time to add to your family, adopt from a local
animal shelter or rescue group.
4. Educate others of helping out animals
5. Extend the circle of compassion towards animals
6. Donate your time to a local animal shelter or rescue group.

Every day in the United States alone over 9,500 animals are euphonized daily due to overpopulation of animal shelters.

The Cruisin Companions section would love for you to upload a photo of your pet for a chance at being the pet of the month. All we ask is that you kindly visit the link and make a donation in any size big or small to help the goal of finding a sweet pet a loving home. No donation is too large or too small, all donations are greatly appreciated and go directly to Animal friends, please visit their website and browse around, who knows maybe you will find your next family member who is patiently waiting for a loving home!

Winnie, the 13 year old black lab and Charlie, 3 year old pug.

Barry shared his guys Winnie and Charlie with us. “My wife adopted Winnie about three years ago from a family in North Carolina that had to get rid of her because the little boy in the house hold was allergic. A couple months after that, the poor dog suffered from kidney failure. But with help from the vet, my wife succeeded in bringing her back to health.

We got Charlie this last summer at the Humane Society in St. Paul. He is a little ball of fire that loves being active. He would love to play with the lab, but she's pretty old and arthritic now, so Charlie loves to be close to her." ~Barry

Dogs know how to take care of each other!~Sara

Snowball and Freckles

A visitor to garage-girls shared this about her 2 kitties, “Snowball and Freckles were born on our front porch in late August of 2000 by a white feral cat w/one blue and one green eye. Because they have been together since birth, and clean each other all the time (they are
Virgos), we decided it would be best to keep them together. " - look at those cute faces!!!

"Zip" owned by Sue Perewitz is a Boston Terrier, he is the welcoming shop dog at Perewitz Cycle Fab in Bridgewater Mass.

Zip has many duties at the shop, greeting customers, performing exciting tricks and being cute. Zip loves motorcycles and knows how to behave properly around them, no jumping and scratching from this smart little guy!

Zip will soon be achieving his record as "Worlds Fastest Boston Terrier" (WFBT) this little guy can run fast! Once his little legs get clocked, we will keep you updated with his times.
