B.A.C.A
Bikers Against Child Abuse
By Sara Liberte
I was lucky to meet Two Feathers of the B.A.C.A of Lehigh Valley when I did a show in Spilt Rock, PA. Two Feathers along with many others are dedicated to presenting awareness of Child Abuse. A registered non-profit organization B.A.C.A has chapters throughout the United States and Abroad. |
|
The group Strives to create a safer environment for children who have been neglected or abused, by providing physical and emotional support for both the child and the family. The group works with local and state officials and agencies to serve and protect these children and tirelessly campaign to prevent all types of abuse of children before it starts.
There are many ways the Lehigh Valley Chapter provides support to children and families such as
- Attending trials and court hearings to support the victim, the child and give emotional support
- Provide monetary gifts to families of child abuse victims for meals, travel expenses, etc. during court proceedings, therapy etc.
- Provide educational presentations in schools and at community events relating to the prevention of child abuse
- Work with local state and federal government to mandate tougher laws for child abusers and public notification of their whereabouts
- Participate in events and toy runs organized by other well-known organizations to support their missions
- Work with local police departments by participating in community awareness events.
- Hold B.A.C.A. fundraisers, selling t-shirts, pins, patches, bumper stickers and memberships.

| Here are some serious statistics that Two Feathers shared with me, these numbers will scare you and hopefully make you realize just how wide spread Child abuse is.. |
|
- Statistics show that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys are sexually exploited before they reach adulthood, yet fewer than 35% of these child sexual assaults are reported to authorities.
- 4 children die every day as a result of child abuse 3 out of the 4 are under the age of 4.
- Of the reported rapes of children under 12 years old, 90% of the victims knew the perpetrator
- Child Abuse occurs at every social-economic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and t all levels of education.
- 36.7% of all women in prison and 14.4% of all men in prison in the US were abused as children.
- Children who have been sexually abused are 2.5 times more likely to abuse alcohol and 3.8 times more likely to become addicted to drugs
- One third of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children continuing the horrible cycle of abuse.

REMEMBER FIBER
By Sidecar Sandy
Most people are worried about how many calories they are taking in every day. Or, how much fat is in that sandwich? Many people forget an important part of complete nutritional health. Fiber.
Fiber is important in many ways. Basically there are 2 types of fiber, water soluble and water insoluble. Both types help combat disease such as colon cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, breast cancer, and are also instrumental in lowering and maintaining a healthy cholesterol level. It aides in weight loss and keeps you from becoming bloated and constipated. And nobody likes that. |
|
|
Water insoluble fiber is found mostly in whole grains and vegetables. Insoluble fiber isn’t easily dissolved in water and isn’t digested by the body. It acts as a catalyst for the indigestible foods by bonding to and guiding it through the intestines. The more insoluble fiber in the body, the quicker things move. Think of it like a group of bikers with sidecars. They go the same distance as everyone else but, carry more on their way through. It’s the fiber that makes sure your colon is the best it can be.
Take a wild guess as to what water soluble fiber does. Yep, it dissolves easily. When dissolved in water it turns into a gel-like material that the body metabolizes. That is the type of fiber linked to lower cholesterol and glucose levels. It is found mostly in beans, fruits, and oats. It is important to incorporate both types of fiber to maintain a well balanced diet.
20 to 35 grams a day is what you should be shooting for. You should gradually add fiber to your diet along with water as this helps the fiber move through your body. Also, changing gradually allows the bacteria in your digestive system to become used to this new regimen. Start by snacking on high fiber fruits such as raspberries, strawberries, and apples. Opt for whole grain breads, as the white flour has had the outer coat (bran) removed and its fiber finely ground down past bodily use. Make nachos with refried black beans and salsa. And a handful of baby carrots will go a long way, considering adult intestines are 25 feet long. (There’s another random fact to amaze your friends with.)
Remember, processed & refined foods have lower fiber contents than raw foods. Removing the skins from fruits and vegetables decreases the fiber content. To help start this healthy change here is my recipe for Spanish Lentils. Lentils are high in fiber, potassium and low in fat and calories. Plus it’s awesome by itself, over brown rice, or spooned onto hotdogs. It’s easy to make, I throw it all in a crock pot on low and let it cook all day. It’s also vegan!
Spanish Lentils
2 cups dried green lentils, rinsed
1 liter vegetable broth (about 4 cups)
2 med. carrots, sliced
2 med. red potatoes, chopped, skin on
1 med. onion, diced
3 T. olive oil
2 bay leaves
4 cloves garlic, minced/ pressed
1 ½ tsp. paprika
¾ tsp. cumin
1 med tomato, chopped or ¼ cup organic mild salsa
Salt & pepper
In a large saucepan, sauté onion & garlic in olive oil over med heat. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook till lentils are done. (Approx. 30 min.) Salt & pepper to taste. Or put it all in a crock pot on low and leave it all day. Either way it’s easy, delicious, and high in fiber! |
